Vol. 5 No. 1

BUSINESS OF SEANAD.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

As I understand it is the intention of the Government, if possible, to wind up the proceedings of the present Session by the end of the month of June, I would like to express the hope that they will so arrange their programme of legislation that we will not be compelled to consider a number of Bills at very short notice at the end of the Session, but that they will be sent to us so as to give reasonable time to the Seanad to discuss and consider them.

Another matter I want to mention is, that if the Seanad is to rise towards the end of June it is probable that we may not meet for a couple of months, and there is an election that must be held for certain vacancies in the Seanad at the end of the year. Some machinery has already been provided for this election, but I am not satisfied that it covers all the ground. I think it would be very important for the Seanad to appoint a committee at once which would look into this matter, consider it, and see what portion of the ground is uncovered and what additional provisions, if any, are necessary in anticipation of this election. Perhaps some Senator would put down a motion to that effect for to-morrow, so that a committee might be appointed and got together as soon as possible.

I shall put down a motion to that effect for to-morrow.
