Vol. 5 No. 4

TREASONABLE OFFENCES BILL 1925. - REPORT (RESUMED).

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

The Report Stage of this Bill only remained over for the purpose of giving the Government an opportunity of dealing with the suggestion made mainly on the motion of Senator Colonel Moore with regard to the qualifying Sections, 1 and

There are two amendments. The first to Section 1 is as follows:

Section 1, sub-section (3), page 2, line 40, after the word "shall" to insert in brackets the words "(unless he satisfies the court that he did not know and had no reason to believe that the person encouraged, harboured, or comforted, was so engaged, concerned, or taking part as aforesaid)."

I think that covers the matter so far as Section 1 is concerned.

Amendment agreed to.

The next amendment is to Section 3:—

To add at the end of the section a new sub-section as follows:—

(2) No person shall be liable to be convicted under this section in respect of the act of encouraging, harbouring or protecting, mentioned in paragraph (b) of the foregoing sub-section, if he satisfies the court that he did not know and had no reason to believe, that the person he encouraged, harboured or protected, was engaged, concerned or taking part in any such attempt as is referred to in the said paragraph.

That is as far as I can go to meet these points.

Amendment put and agreed to.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

I think that we might dispose of this Bill, and perhaps some Senator would move the suspension of the Standing Orders.

I move—"That the Standing Orders be suspended to enable the final stages of the Bill to be taken."

I second the motion.

Question put and agreed to.
Question—"That the Bill be received for final consideration and do now pass"—put and agreed to.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

As far as I have been able to ascertain it is fairly certain that we will be able to meet on Thursday next for the Second Stage of the Shannon Electricity Bill. Copies of the Bill were circulated to-day to Senators, and I think they will have copies of it in its final shape by Wednesday morning. The other stages of the Bills that have been passed through Committee to-day will probably appear on the Order Paper also for the Report Stage.

The Seanad adjourned at 5.45 p.m. until 3 o'clock on Thursday, May 28th.
