Vol. 7 No. 9

CORONERS (AMENDMENT) BILL, 1926—FOURTH STAGE.

I move that this Bill be considered on report.

I beg to second.

CATHAOIRLEACH

There are no amendments down to this Bill on report.

There was one matter that stood over. There was an amendment to Section 9 proposed by Senator Dr. O'Sullivan. This section deals with cases where criminal proceedings are to be instituted, after the inquest is commenced. The section gives the Coroner power to adjourn the inquest until the criminal proceedings are finished. Senator O'Sullivan was in favour of the inquest going on and of the verdict being confined merely to the cause of death, so that no injury could happen to anybody who might be charged in connection with the death. I, personally, was very strongly against this amendment and in favour of the section as it stands. Other members of the Select Committee that considered the Bill, and whose work this Bill is, are also of opinion that the present section is the proper one and that it should remain, and I think Senator O'Sullivan is satisfied.

CATHAOIRLEACH

No amendment has been put down, and I presume that Senator O'Sullivan has dropped his opposition. We may take the Report Stage as agreed in the absence of any amendment.

Question put and agreed to.
