Vol. 7 No. 10

PRIVATE BUSINESS. - BUSINESS OF SEANAD.

CATHAOIRLEACH

I might mention to the House that in view of what we have done and also in consequence of an intimation I have received from Senator Yeats, that he is not proceeding with the motion which stands in his name for to-morrow, I am afraid that the business for to-morrow will be very short. All that will be left will be the Committee Stage of three non-contentious Bills. The Appropriation Bill and the Finance Bill have passed the other House to-day and, I presume, will be received here this evening. That would make it possible, if the House wishes, to consider them on Tuesday. In addition we would be able to take some of the contentious Bills on Friday. I would suggest to the House that it would be more convenient if, instead of meeting to-morrow for a brief sitting, we might meet on Friday and take the Committee Stage of the non-contentious Bills with the Committee Stage of the contentious Bills as far as we could get through them.

It might be well to sit at 11 o'clock on Friday, because it is obvious that we will have a very long day's work.

CATHAOIRLEACH

Of course there is the advantage that it would facilitate country Senators if they want to get away for the week-end.

Senators have their arrangements already made, and if there is any change in the programme it means breaking them up now.

CATHAOIRLEACH

I agree that it is desirable that we ought to keep to some definite arrangement. We are approaching the end of the Session, however, and it is very difficult to know from one day to another what business will be available. I think on the whole we would be putting you and the rest of the Senators to less inconvenience by meeting on Friday.

I have no objection to meeting on Friday. My objection is to meeting at 11 o'clock.

Eleven o'clock has been the usual hour for our meetings on Fridays in the past.

CATHAOIRLEACH

Yes, that is so. If any Senator who cannot come in at that particular hour has any special interest in any of the Bills that are before us on Friday, I would, if he would let me know, try to have that particular Bill held over for him if he wishes to come in a little later than 11 o'clock. I think the general convenience of the House would be best met if we managed to meet on Friday at 11 o'clock.

The Seanad adjourned at 6.15 p.m. to 11 o'clock on Friday morning, 2nd July.
