In accordance with our Standing Orders, I have to announce that the following five candidates have been duly nominated for election for the existing vacancy in the Seanad caused by the death of Senator William Sears:—
Richard Andrew Butler, Pope's Hall, Skerries, Co. Dublin.
Qualifications: Farmer. Former Senator. President of the Irish Farmers' Union.—Nominated by Senator O'Hanlon.
George Gavan Duffy, 48 Bushy Park Road, Dublin.
Qualifications: Member for South Dublin, 1918, and afterwards for Co. Dublin. Secretary to First Dáil Cabinet, 1919. Envoy abroad (Paris, Brussels, Rome), 1919-1921. Member of Irish Delegation to London, 1921. Minister in Dáil Cabinet, 1922. Barrister-at-law.—Nominated by Senator Kenny.
Sir Nugent Everard, Bart., Randalstown, Navan, County Meath.
Qualifications: Member of Seanad Eireann, 1922-28.—Nominated by Senator Sir Bryan Mahon.
Seán McGarry, 6 Charlemont Terrace, Dun Laoghaire.
Qualifications: Ex-T.D. Ex-Alderman, Dublin Corporation. Ex-member of the Irish Lights Board.— Nominated by Senator Milroy.
Rt. Hon. Laurence O'Neill, Bridge House, Portmarnock, County Dublin.
Qualifications: Lord Mayor of Dublin.—Nominated by Senator Alfred Byrne.
The first ballot resulted as follows:—Sir Nugent Everard, 32 votes; Mr. Butler, 31 votes; Mr. O'Neill, 22 votes; Mr. Gavan Duffy, 19 votes; and Mr. McGarry, 13 votes.
Mr. Gavan Duffy and Mr. McGarry were then eliminated, and on a second ballot the voting was:—Sir Nugent Everard, 32 votes; Mr. Butler, 25 votes; and Mr. O'Neill, 21 votes.
Mr. O'Neill was then eliminated, and in the final ballot the voting was:—Sir Nugent Everard, 29 votes; Mr. Butler, 21 votes.
