Vol. 12 No. 12

Resignation of Senator the Marquess of Lansdowne.

Cathaoirleach

I also regret to have to announce to the House that I have received a letter from Senator the Marquess of Lansdowne tentering his resignation as a member of the House. This causes a second vacancy in the membership of the House. There is no power under our Standing Orders to hold a combined election for the filling of the two vacancies on the one day. In some ways, perhaps, it might be undesirable that the two elections for the filling of these vacancies should be held separately on the same day. Therefore, I suggest that we should hold the elections for the filling of the vacancies on two successive days; that we should hold an election for the filling of the first vacancy on Wednesday, 19th June, and the election for the filling of the second vacancy on the following day, Thursday. The nominations in both cases will close a week from to-day. Is the House agreed?

Agreed.
