Vol. 14 No. 32

Death of the Leas-Chathaoirleach.

Cathaoirleach

I very deeply regret to announce to the House the death, on the 6th September last, of the Leas-Chathaoirleach, Senator P.J. Hooper. To me his death has been a very great loss. He was a man of very sound judgment, of great earnestness and of great assiduity. On many occasions he was to me, by reason of his counsel, a tower of strength. As a friend I miss him sincerely and as a colleague his loss is very, very great indeed. I can say nothing which would in any way add to your feelings of sorrow in the great loss that we all have suffered. I would like to say from my heart that I miss him.

I desire to associate myself with what the Cathaoirleach has so fittingly said regarding the loss we have sustained by the death of our colleague.

Cathaoirleach

I take it that it is the wish of the House that an expression of our sincere condolence be conveyed to the family of the late Senator Hooper. As an indication of our sympathy I will ask Senators to stand.

Senators rose in their places.
