Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 13 Jul 1932

Vol. 15 No. 21

Private Business. - Business of the Seanad.

Before we proceed to deal with the public business, would it be possible to get from you, sir, some indication of the Bills we are likely to receive from the other House so that Senators will know when they will be taken?

I will try to procure that information from the Government.

Cathaoirleach

Will the Minister be able to give any idea of the Bills that are likely to be proceeded with immediately?

I would suggest that the first Bill, the Constitution (Removal of Oath) Bill, 1932, be deferred until next week. It was only finished late last night, and there was a considerable amount of business to be prepared for to-day. With regard to the Electricity (Supply) (Amendment) Bill, I think it will be non-controversial. All the Bills on the Clár to-day could, in my opinion, be disposed of unless there was a prolonged discussion on the Finance (Customs Duties) (No. 2) Bill. The other Bills, as far as I know, are the Control of Manufactures Bill, the main Finance Bill and the Housing Bill. I cannot say if there will be any controversy on these Bills. The intention is that the Dáil will rise this week, so that we are anxious to expedite these Bills. It is a matter entirely for the Seanad to decide which they would like to take.

May we take it that no other important Bills besides those mentioned will come up?

That is as far as I know. It may be that one or two other measures may come up. I know of none at the moment.

My object was to try to get information this afternoon before we adjourned so that the House when it meets next week will have some idea of the arrangement of business.

Cathaoirleach

I am sure the Minister will try to arrange that.

Did the Minister mention the Control of Manufactures Bill?

Cathaoirleach

Yes.

Is it the desire of the Government to pass that Bill before we adjourn?

It is the intention of the Government to put that Bill through the Seanad before the Recess. It is a matter for the Seanad how quickly it gets through.

I would like to know how long the Seanad will continue to sit after the Dáil adjourns.

Cathaoirleach

As long as they have Bills to deal with.

Is the Government adamant in its attitude to persist in putting that Bill through all stages?

Cathaoirleach

I do not think you should ask that question, Senator. The Minister says it is the intention to put it through, and we must leave it at that.
