Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 12 Jul 1933

Vol. 17 No. 2

Broadcast of Seanad Debate.

With the leave of the House, I should like to draw attention to the report made on the wireless last night with regard to the proceedings in this House. You will remember, sir, that a statement was made in the Dáil by the President to the effect that there were three reports from the Constitution Committee, two of which recommended a delay of six months, and one of which recommended a delay of four months. That was repeated by the Minister who was here yesterday, and contradicted in detail during the debate. At the end of the debate the Minister agreed that the contradiction was correct. The report on the wireless of the proceedings of this House stated that the Constitution (Amendment No. 19) Bill, 1933, was before the Seanad yesterday, and went on to state that there were three reports from the Constitution Committee, two of which recommended six months, and one of which recommended four months' delay. There was no comment, except to say that the Constitution provided for nine months, and that a period of three months was now proposed. As that affects the general privileges and rights of this House, I think, sir, if you can see your way to draw the attention of the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs to the inaccuracy, it would be desirable. The statement, no doubt, was made inadvertently, but it would definitely mislead the public when considering this question.

Cathaoirleach

I fancy it would be the desire of the House that I should endeavour to get in touch with the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs, and to point out what has occurred. Is that the desire of the House?

Agreed.

Cathaoirleach

I shall write to the Minister accordingly.
