Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 6 Dec 1933

Vol. 17 No. 26

International Load Line Convention.

Question proposed:—
That Seanad Eireann approves of the International Load Line Convention with Final Protocol, signed at London on the 5th day of July, 1930, a copy of which was laid on the Table of the Seanad on the 16th day of August, 1933, and recommends the Executive Council to take the necessary steps to ratify the said Convention and Final Protocol.—(Minister for Lands and Fisheries).

I beg to second.

With regard to the International Load Line Convention and the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, a Bill embodying both conventions was before the House some weeks ago. I do not think there was much discussion, but at least there was some discussion. The International Load Line Convention fixes the manner of the load line marking of ships and the circumstances under which these load lines may or may not be observed. The purpose is merely to secure uniformity between the various international regulations. The convention was ratified by the Saorstát and we have brought our legislation into conformity with it. It comes into operation on the 1st January. I think that is the date generally agreed to between the countries concerned.

Question agreed to.
