Vol. 18 No. 6

Resignation of a Senator.

Cathaoirleach

I have to announce to the House that I have received a letter from Senator Arthur Rose Vincent, resigning his seat in the Seanad.

It would be a pity to allow this rare occasion, when we have the resignation of a Senator, to pass without an expression of regret. I understand that the reason Senator Vincent has been unable to attend here for a considerable time is due to reasons of ill-health. During his short time in the Seanad he was an active member and I believe promised to be a very useful Senator. I very much regret that he is unable to remain a member. It is hardly necessary to make reference to his gift to the nation, which has been suitably expressed previously. At the same time it is an additional reason why we regret the severance of his connection with this House.

I desire to join with Senator Douglas in regretting Senator Vincent's resignation.

I would not like to allow this opportunity to pass without expressing regret at the resignation of Senator Vincent. I think it is fitting to recall the gift of the Bourn-Vincent Park at Killarney, which Senator Vincent so generously handed over to the nation. Although the Senator did not agree with the Government in many things, this is a fitting opportunity to record our gratitude and the gratitude of the nation to him for his gracious gift. I would like this expression to go on record on the occasion of Senator Vincent's resignation.

Cathaoirleach

The House thoroughly regrets the resignation and the departure from amongst us of Senator Vincent, particularly when it is caused by ill-health. I am sure Senators will hear of the Senator's resignation with regret. Senator Vincent was a Valuable and most useful member. Personally I regret his departure from us very much.
