Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 11 Apr 1934

Vol. 18 No. 14

Death of the United States Minister.

I move:—

That the Seanad extend its deep sympathy to the President and people of the United States of America on the death of their esteemed representative in Saorstát Eireann, the Hon. William Wallace McDowell; and I ask you, Sir, to convey to Mr. McDowell's bereaved relatives the condolence of this House.

I do not need to add much to the resolution. I feel it expresses the sympathy of every Senator at the sad and tragic circumstances under which Mr. McDowell passed away. It is worthy of note, perhaps, to point to the fact that at the time of his death Mr. McDowell was in the middle of a statement expressing his affection and his regard for the people of this country and his pleasure at being appointed here. Every Senator, I am sure, will feel that our country has lost very much by the passing of Mr. McDowell, and I therefore commend the resolution to the sympathy of the House.

I beg to second the resolution, and to say that Mr. McDowell, all through his life, was a sincere and an influential friend of Ireland.

Cathaoirleach

I will put the resolution proposed in such a sympathetic manner by the Minister for Lands. I will add nothing to it because I am sure every member of the House feels very deeply the circumstances of Mr. McDowell's tragic death.

Resolution passed, all the members rising in their places.
