Vol. 18 No. 15

Registration of Maternity Homes Bill, 1934—Committee.

Sections 1 to 10, inclusive, agreed to.
SECTION 11.

I move amendment No. 1:—

Section 11, sub-section (1). To delete the sub-section and to substitute therefor a new sub-section as follows:—

(1) Whenever on or after the appointed day a death occurs in a maternity home in respect of which a person is registered in the register kept by a local authority, such person shall give in writing to the chief executive officer of such local authority notice of such death and the cause thereof by delivering or by despatching by registered post, within 12 hours after such death, to such chief executive officer such notice.

It is most important that this provision should be inserted in the Bill. Where this baby-farming is carried on to a large extent, deaths occur very frequently. The cases are hidden up and nobody knows anything about them. It is most important to provide that notification must be given within a prescribed period after a death occurs.
