Seanad Éireann debate -
Thursday, 25 Jul 1935

Vol. 20 No. 10

Business of the Seanad.

Yesterday we came to an agreement not to take the Unemployment Assistance (Amendment) Bill, 1935, next week but to put it off until the following week. This was arranged in order to meet the wishes of the Labour Party but I have heard that on reconsidering the matter the Labour Senators have decided that they will not ask the Seanad to meet the week after next for the sole purpose of considering that Bill.

I think that Senator Counihan also objected to certain of the Bills which have come up from the Dáil this week being put through all their stages next week, but I do not know if he feels strongly on the matter and as far as I can judge the rest of the House would like to conclude the business that is ready for us. I would like some expression as to what would be most convenient for Senators, but in any case we shall take the Second Stages of all the Bills next week.

So far as we are concerned, if the Seanad desires to pass the Unemployment Assistance (Amendment) Bill through all the stages next week, we shall have no objection.

Thank you, Senator.

I will ask you to consider the possibility of taking item No. 6 immediately after item No. 1, if it would meet with the convenience of the House, as the Minister for Industry and Commerce will be engaged later on. He is here in connection with item No. 1, and if item No. 6 were taken immediately afterwards, it would facilitate him greatly.

I am sure the House will agree to that course.

Agreed.
