Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 12 Jun 1940

Vol. 24 No. 20

Public Business. - Institute for Advanced Studies Bill, 1939—Message from Dáil.

The following message has been received from Dáil Eireann:—

"Dáil Eireann has agreed to amendments Nos. 1 to 6, inclusive, and Nos. 8 to 17, inclusive, made by Seanad Eireann to the Institute for Advanced Studies Bill, 1940. In lieu of amendment No. 7, it has made the following amendment:— In Section 8, page 5, at the end of the section a new sub-section added as follows:—

(3) Notwithstanding anything contained in this section, the salary, tenure of office, and conditions of service at and on which a senior professor is appointed shall not be altered without his consent during his term of office and no senior professor shall be removed from his office in contravention of the terms on which he was appointed thereto,

to which the agreement of Seanad Eireann is desired."

Probably, Sir, the Seanad may not recognise immediately that the amendment that was rejected by the Dáil, No. 7, was the amendment that was put in after I had objected to it, and the Taoiseach promised that he would give further consideration to the point made by me. I had an opportunity of reading this amendment before it was passed in the Dáil—I refer to the amendment that has been inserted—and it is quite clear to me that the Taoiseach has met entirely the point that I made. I am perfectly satisfied with the amendment, and I therefore move:—

"That the Seanad do not insist on amendment No. 7 made by it to the Institute for Advanced Studies Bill, 1939, and agree to the amendment in lieu thereof made by Dáil Eireann to the Bill."

Question put and agreed to.
Sitting suspended at 4.30 p.m. and resumed at 7 p.m.
