Vol. 24 No. 26

Closing of Oireachtas Restaurant.

Before proceeding with the business, I should like to ask you, Sir, for permission to raise a matter of some urgency.

I should like to hear what the matter is.

On arriving here this morning, I learned that a decision has been arrived at to close down the Oireachtas Restaurant. I regard that as rather a serious decision. I do not know by what authority this decision was arrived at, but I do know that a considerable number of people will be thrown out of employment as a result of it. That is the importance of the matter for me. In addition, it would be very inconvenient if members of the Dáil and Seanad were to have no restaurant to which they could bring friends and constituents who may come up to see them. I think it is unusual, in any country where there is a Parliament, not to have a restaurant where members and their friends can dine, if they wish. The decision has been arrived at, and has actually been acted upon, and I should be glad if you, Sir, would do something about putting the matter right or having it further investigated.

This is the first intimation I have had officially that the restaurant services were not functioning as usual. I would suggest to the Senator that he should bring the matter before the Restaurant Committee on which this House is represented by seven members. It is, of course, only an advisory body, but I suggest that that would be the most satisfactory way of dealing with the matter.

I am satisfied, so long as the matter is ventilated and so long as you, Sir, see that it is brought to the notice of the Restaurant Committee.

Yes, I shall do that.
