Vol. 24 No. 27

Press Censorship—Motion Withdrawn.

The following motion appeared on the Order Paper in the name of Senator Sir John Keane:—
That, in the opinion of this House, the manner in which the powers of Press censorship are being exercised is unreasonable.

With regard to the motion which appears on the Order Paper in my name, there does not seem to be much prospect of its being reached until possibly a rather late hour to-night. I have had certain conversations with the Minister, and he has quite convinced me that in its present form it is rather too wide and somewhat dangerous. I have agreed with the Minister to amend it to deal with domestic issues only. If the House will agree, I am prepared to withdraw the motion in its present form, and put it down in a new form for the next meeting.

Agreed.
