Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 22 Jul 1942

Vol. 26 No. 21

Local Elections (Amendment) Bill, 1942—Committee and Final Stages.

Sections 1 to 4, inclusive, put and agreed to.
SECTION 5.
Question proposed: "That Section 5 stand part of the Bill."

On Section 5, perhaps you would give me permission to explain to the Seanad that the difficulty which it was feared might arise in connection with the election of mayors, by reason of the fact that the period of the year between 19th August and 31st December contains no 22nd June, and which it was thought might necessitate an amendment to this section, has been resolved by the lawyers. They have told me that, by regulation made under Section 6, I can substitute the appointed day, 19th August, for 22nd June.

Question put and agreed to.
Sections 6, 7 and 8 and the Title agreed to.
Bill reported without amendment.
Question—"That the Bill be received for final consideration"—put and agreed to.
Question proposed: "That the Bill do now pass."

Will the Minister tell us what will be the position of mayors and chairmen of councils?

They will have to be elected afresh.

Would the Minister say whether that is definite, because there seems to be a good deal of doubt about it?

There is no doubt about it.

They will have to be re-elected, even in the cities?

Question put and agreed to.
Ordered: "That the Bill be returned to the Dáil."
