Vol. 31 No. 23

Sugar (Prohibition of Import) Order, 1946—Motion of Approval.

I formally move:—

That Seanad Éireann hereby approves of the Sugar (Prohibition of Import) Order, 1946.

This is just a formal motion. Under the Sugar (Control of Imports) Act, 1936, it is necessary to have a motion every year in relation to the importation of sugar. The effect of the Orders in the past has been to confine the importation of sugar to the Irish Sugar Company. In fact, however, there has been no sugar imported in recent years and it is not anticipated that there will be any importation this year. The Order must be made, however, and must be confirmed in accordance with the requirements of the legislation. In present circumstances, it is nothing more than a formality.

Question put and agreed to.
