Vol. 42 No. 3

Control of Imports (Quota No. 13) (Artificial Silk Piece Goods Amendment) Order, 1953—Approval Motion.

I formally move:—

That Seanad Éireann hereby approves of the Control of Imports (Quota No. 13) (Artificial Silk Piece Goods Amendment) Order, 1953.

I think the innovation of the explanatory memorandum relating to this Order has been welcomed by Senators.

An Order was made under the Control of Imports Act prohibiting the importation, except under licence, of rayon cloths manufactured to resemble woollen and worsted suitings, containing more than 85 per cent. by way of artificial silk staple fibre which exceed eight ounces in weight per square yard and which are not less than 37 inches in width. Subsequently it was found that these cloths were being imported at less than 37 inches in width and that the quota Order was being evaded in that way. This amending Order was made so as to extend the scope of the quota on spun rayon suitings to cloths of a width of more than 18 inches.

Question put and agreed to.
