Vol. 43 No. 13

Sugar (Prohibition of Import) Order, 1954.

I move:—

That Seanad Eireann hereby approves of the Sugar (Prohibition of Import) Order, 1954.

Members of the House are very familiar with the general terms of this Order.

The Sugar (Control of Import) Act empowers the Government to prohibit the importation of sugar except under licence. These import licences may be granted only to the Irish Sugar Company. The Sugar (Prohibition of Import) Order is valid for a period of 12 months only and requires annual renewal. It has been already confirmed by the Dáil and it now requires the approval of the Seanad.

Question put and agreed to.
