Vol. 44 No. 9

Private Business. - Local Government Provisional Orders Confirmation Bill, 1955—Second and Subsequent Stages.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

Molaim an Dara Céim den Bhille seo don Seanad.

Question put and agreed to.
Agreed, that the remaining stages be taken now.
Bill passed through Committee without amendment and reported.
Question proposed: "That the Bill be received for final consideration."

On that question, if I am in order I should like to say that I personally am very displeased with the method of extending the borough boundary of Cork. It is being done in a way with which I am not satisfied at all.

If the Senator has any question to ask on that he can do so on the Fifth Stage of the Bill.

Question put and agreed to.
Question proposed: "That the Bill do now pass."

I am anxious to point out to the Minister, who has the power to extend the borough boundary of Cork by Order, that the position in Cork is that the county council are drawing such a very big revenue from the suburbs of Cork City that it is strange to say that the borough line is still there, notwithstanding the fact that it is so near the City of Cork. I should like to point out to the House that the area of Cork City is smaller than the urban area of Macroom. The fact that the line is there at the moment is due to lack of agreement with the county council to get them to forfeit their interests in the suburbs of Cork City. The way the borough boundary is being extended is making the thing very ineffective so far as the Cork Corporation is concerned. I hope that, when representations are made to the Minister in connection with this matter, he will exercise the power that he has by extending the present boundary line.

As a member of the committee of the Cork County Council, I should like to point out, arising out of what Senator Hickey has said, that this boundary is being extended as a result of agreement between the Cork County Council and the Cork Corporation. I am amazed at the reference which Senator Hickey has made to it because this is an agreed measure.

As a member of the Cork Corporation, I have not heard any complaints about this. We could, of course, extend it so far that it could go to Midleton and so make Cork bigger than Dublin. We have not had any complaints in the Cork Corporation in regard to the new boundary line.

In view of the position at present, I am of opinion that there is great need for a change.

Question put and agreed to.
Ordered: That the Bill be sent to the Dáil.
