Seanad Éireann debate -
Thursday, 15 Mar 1956

Vol. 45 No. 16

Business of Seanad.

It is intended to take business as on the Order Paper, and I may say that it is understood that the Central Fund Bill will conclude in the other House not later than Tuesday evening and, therefore, we shall be meeting next Wednesday. I take it the House will have no objection to considering the Central Fund Bill on Wednesday next? There will also be available the Supplies and Services Bill. I take it an endeavour will be made next week to conclude both these Bills? The following week is Holy Week. I have also a report from the Committee on Procedure and Privileges.

Is it the intention to try to get through the agenda to-day, and if not, will the Seanad be prepared to meet to-morrow for the purpose of finishing the agenda, several items of which have been before us for quite a time? In view of what Senator Hayes has said, it appears that we shall be dealing largely with the Central Fund Bill and the Supplies and Services Bill next week, and I should like to know whether it is hoped that we may get through this agenda to-day, and, if not, whether it is the intention to use our right to meet to-morrow morning.

It is our intention to endeavour to get through the business to-day, but it is not the intention to meet to-morrow.

Might I urge the advisability of reconsidering that? Yesterday, we were very harsh upon people who absented themselves from work for one day and lost 20 or 30 years' pension rights.

Let us keep to the business of the House.

I do not think it would be wise for the House to meet to-morrow. The following day is St. Patrick's Day and Senators would be leaving town. I think we should have plenty of time next week to dispose of the business.

My suggestion was that we meet to-morrow morning, as is provided for in the Standing Orders, which would allow Senators to go home in the afternoon in time for St. Patrick's Day.

Mr. Douglas

There should be a restriction on the debate.

The intention is to adjourn this evening.
