Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 10 Jul 1963

Vol. 56 No. 16

Private Business. - Electoral Bill, 1962: Motion for Earlier Signature.

I move:

That, pursuant to subsection 2º of Section 2 of Article 25 of the Constitution, Seanad Éireann concur with the Government in a request to the President to sign the Electoral Bill, 1962, on a date which is earlier than the fifth day after the date on which the Bill shall have been presented to him.

The reason for the motion is that if the Bill had to wait the usual five to seven days before becoming law, it would leave very little time for the circulation and consideration by the Dáil, which goes into recess on Friday week next, 19th instant, of the draft regulations which must be made before the recess if the Bill is to apply to the next register of electors—for which the qualifying date is 15th September.

Why such a hurry?

That is the reason.

The Taoiseach said he is anxious to have a general election.

Question put and agreed to.

In view of the fact that the inter-Parliamentary Union meeting is at 7 p.m. I suggest we should adjourn to 7.30 p.m. to enable members to attend if they so wish.

Business suspended at 6 p.m. and resumed at 7.30 p.m.
