Vol. 66 No. 15

Death of Senator: Expression of Sympathy.

Since our last meeting, Senators will have learned with deep regret of the death of our colleague, Senator John B. O'Quigley. Although he had been ill for some time past, his passing came as a shock to most of us. I bhFlathas Dé go raibh a anam.

The late Senator, following a brilliant scholastic career, entered the Civil Service in 1945. Always interested in staff welfare and conditions he was prominent in Civil Service association activities. In 1950 he was called to the Bar and, following his resignation from the Civil Service, built up an extensive practice in Dublin and in the western circuit.

The late Senator was first elected in 1957 on the Nominating Bodies Sub-Panel of the Labour Panel. Following his re-election in 1965 on the Oireachtas Sub-Panel of the Cultural and Educational Panel he was appointed leader of the Fine Gael group in the House. An indefatigable worker and cogent speaker he made many valuable contributions to our deliberations. In particular his clarity of mind and his training as a barrister made his contributions on legislation stimulating and authoritative. His passing will be keenly felt by the Members of the House.

To the widow and children of the late Senator, I shall convey, on your behalf and on my own, our sympathy and appreciation. Solas Dé lena anam.

Senators rose in their places.
