Vol. 78 No. 1

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take No. 1. It is expected that we will get the Local Elections (Petitions and Disqualifications) Bill from the Dáil during the day. In that event it is proposed to take it also, together with an early signature Motion, because, as Senators will be aware, it is necessary to have the Local Elections Bill passed before the nomination date for the local elections which will commence on the 16th May. I am afraid I cannot give any accurate timetable because it depends on the Dáil, but it is expected that the Bill will come to us in the course of the day and it may be necessary to interrupt discussion on Motion No. 1 if the Bill arrives sometime about 5 o'clock, because we want to take it during the course of the day.

It is proposed to take No. 1 and if the Local Government (Petitions and Disqualifications) Bill is received from the Dáil it will also be taken today.

On a point of information, assuming that it does not come until very late in the evening what is the proposition for tomorrow?

The Whips could have a discussion if that arises. I think what we should aim, if possible, to finish at our normal time at 10.00 p.m., but if we are within an hour or two of finishing the other Bill it might suit Senators to sit on, rather than come back tomorrow or early next week. We could have a discussion about it at that stage.

The Order of Business is agreed.
