Seanad Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 28 May 1974

Vol. 78 No. 4

Prisons Bill, 1974: Motion for Earlier Signature.

I move:

That, pursuant to subsection 2º of section 2 of Article 25 of the Constitution, Seanad Éireann concur with the Government in a request to the President to sign the Prisons Bill, 1974, on a date which is earlier than the fifth day after the date on which the Bill shall have been presented to him.

We are obviously agreeing to this motion, because we agree with the principle of the Bill and we accept that it must be enforced by Friday next. However we should reiterate that we agree to this motion under protest. We look on it as an example of incompetent government.

Question put and agreed to.
The Seanad adjourned at 5.40 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, 29th May, 1974.
