Vol. 78 No. 17

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 1 and 2. As regards No. 2, I understand that the print of the Bill will not be available possibly until 5 o'clock. It may be that we will be adjourning from the end of the discussion on No. 1 until the Finance Bill is available.

That is agreed.

If the Order of Business for today is to take No. 1, which I estimate will probably not detain the House for very long, then might it be possible to take item No. 4— Illegitimate Children (Maintenance and Succession) Bill—rather than to just adjourn the House as though we did not have business before us? I have raised this matter a number of times on the Order of Business and I would remind Senators that it affects the rights of the citizens of this country. It is an important Bill which ought to be debated by us. Since we apparently have time on our hands, rather than adjourn and come back at 5 o'clock I propose that we open the Second Reading of this Bill and, if possible, that we take it again at another convenient time before the Recess.

I have explained on a number of occasions to Senator Robinson that it is not proposed by me, in any event, to take No. 4 this side of the Summer Recess.

I propose to move an amendment to the Order of Business that, rather than the House adjourn for a couple of hours, we take No. 4 on the Order Paper between Nos. 1 and 2.

The proposal has not been seconded and therefore, falls. It is agreed to take item No. 2 not earlier than 5 o'clock.
