Seanad Éireann debate -
Thursday, 26 May 1977

Vol. 86 No. 14

Finance Bill, 1977 (Certified Money Bill) Committee and Final Stages.

Sections 1 to 56, inclusive, agreed to.
FIRST SCHEDULE.
Question proposed: "That the First Schedule be the First Schedule to the Bill."

Before we leave the Committee Stage, I should like to ask the Minister a question. He said that if Fianna Fáil carry out their policy to abolish rates it will mean an increase of 14p in the £ in income tax. The Minister has reduced rates by 25 per cent this year. Does that mean that he is going to increase income tax by 3½p to make up for that?

The difference between the Senator's policy and ours is that we believe in reducing rates without increasing other tax rates.

That is exactly what we intend doing too. Anything the Minister can do we can do better.

Question put and agreed to.
Second Schedule agreed to.
Title agreed to.
Bill reported without recommendation, received for final consideration and ordered to be returned to the Dáil.
The Seanad adjourned at 1.45 p.m.sine die.
