Vol. 92 No. 12

Order of Business

It is proposed to take Nos. 1 and 2 in that order. It is proposed to sit until 10 p.m., if necessary, with a break for lunch from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.

I wish to contribute on Item No. 2. To follow a Bill of this kind, which is fairly arduous, with another subject which requires a little preparation is a bit unfair to Senators who want to do their preparation properly. I think it would be reasonable to break for tea. We had a long day yesterday but to do that two days running is a bit unreasonable. I would ask the Leader of the House to consider breaking for an evening meal.

Will the House be sitting tomorrow? Having regard to yesterday's business, it would appear that there would not be too much time available for Item No. 2 and it might be pointless continuing the debate on Item No. 2 with only one speaker. I do not see much point in ordering Item No. 2, and keeping the House here until 10 o'clock tonight.

I am probably being optimistic in ordering No. 2. I think we should use all the available time we have today. In the unlikely event of No. 1 being concluded by lunchtime, we should try to finish No. 2 or at least get some of it done. I would not propose to start No. 2 if we have not finished No. 1 by lunchtime. We will have to finish Committee Stage this week, no matter how long it takes us.

Order of Business agreed to.
