Vol. 93 No. 11

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in that order.

I would like to ask the Leader of the House about item No. 18 on the Order Paper, relating to Afghanistan and Iran. About a month ago I raised this matter along with a number of other Senators, including Senator Hussey and Senator Murphy in whose names the motion is down. This is quite a serious matter where many of us feel the Government should have a clear policy. Time is not on our side in relation to this issue. The Leader of the House accepted the necessity for an early debate on the matter and the question of the Olympics is coming up fairly soon. I appreciate the fact that Senator Hussey may still be in the United States, but independent of that, this seems to be an issue we should be facing up to. I would like to ask the Leader of the House when it is his intention to arrange that that be taken.

The Whip had discussions with Senator Murphy and Senator Hussey about a suitable date. One date suggested to them was not suitable and the matter had to be postponed. The earliest date on which it can be taken will be this day fortnight, and I hope it will be taken that day.

Is there any reason why it cannot be taken next week?

The Minister will be away next week.

Order of Business agreed to.

Before we go on to the first item, would you allow me to pay a short tribute to our colleague, Michael Yeats, who served the House not only as a Member but as Cathaoirleach for a long number of years? I would like to wish him success in his new role in the Council of Ministers.
