Vol. 95 No. 23

Transport Bill, 1981: Committee and Final Stages.

Bill put through Committee, reported without amendment and received for final consideration.
Question proposed: "That the Bill do now pass."

This Bill is entitled a Transport Bill. I wonder am I in order in asking the Minister whether, since all transport policy matters should be integrated — and the point was made earlier in this debate — responsibility for roads will be coming under his jurisdiction?

That is not something to which I can say yes or no at this stage. It is something that will be under consideration. I can see reasons for: transport includes roads; I can see reasons against because roads have to be built by engineers and there is a whole complex scene there. Then it is further complicated by differing roads, national primaries, national secondaries, county roads and so on. So at this stage I cannot say yes, but it is under consideration.

Question put and agreed to.
