Vol. 98 No. 1

Prevention of Electoral Abuses Bill, 1982: Committee and Final Stages.

SECTION 1.
Question proposed: "That section 1 stand part of the Bill".

The only question I have on section 1 is: You may find a number of people living in an urban area, 20, 30, 40 or 50 miles away from their home base and they go back to their home base to vote. It is possible that their names are also on the register where they are employed. If these people vote in both places, what machinery is there in this Bill to deal with this situation?

The type of case the Seantor has just mentioned is exactly one of the reasons why there is a need to tighten up the whole compilation of the register, and it is one of the areas that will have to be tackled in this context.

The Minister said he hopes to have the report back within three months. Would the Minister like to say when the report will be published?

It will be acted on immediately.

Question put and agreed to.
Section 2 agreed to.
Title agreed to.
Bill reported without amendment, received for final consideration and passed.

Acting Chairman

I think it is necessary to explain something before the Minister leaves the House. In the Minister's opening remarks the Minister made reference to speaking about cases that are sub judice. I checked on this, and while people could have precluded themselves from making reference to it, the procedures on a Bill would not preclude them.

I would like to thank the Seanad.
