Is seanóir é mar Seanadóir. Thainig sé isteach sa Teach seo níos mó ná fiche bliain ó shin. Tá cleachtadh mór aige ar chursaí an Tí agus mar sin is an-oiriúnach é don phost atá chun líonadh againn inniu.
I have pleasure in proposing Senator McDonald as Leas-Chathaoirleach. He was elected first to this House in 1961. Indeed, I first met Senator McDonald in the campaign for election to the House in 1961. He has been a Member since except for four years when he went off to investigate circumstances in another place and then returned to us, evidently finding the Seanad more to his satisfaction than that other place. He has held the position of Leas-Chathaoirleach in this House. He has held the position of Cathaoirleach in this House. He has also held the position of Vice-President of the European Parliament and, as such, a member of the extended bureau of the European Parliament. He is, therefore, a parliamentarian of great experience. He has shown himself, when acting in the Chair in this House, to have a command of the business of the House and also an ability to conduct business smoothly. He is, in my opinion, in every way suitable to be Leas-Chathaoirleach. I propose that the House should elect him as such.
