Vol. 98 No. 5

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 14, in that order.

Last week there was a demand to take No. 10 in the names of Senators Ross and Murphy and I understood it would be taken today.

Do I understand that it is proposed to take No. 1 today? I accept it is just ordered for today. I should like to ask the Leader of the House if it could be taken at a later stage. This is a very important Bill to which the House would like to give due consideration. I should like to ask the Leader of the House if it could be ordered for another day, possibly in two weeks time.

No. 1 is merely to fix a date for taking the Bill and it will not be debated today. With regard to No. 10, that would have been taken today, but, in spite of the intense pressure to have it taken, Senator Murphy is not here today. Therefore it cannot be taken. It would have been taken otherwise and that is the reason it is proposed to take No. 14 instead.

Do I take it that No. 10 will be taken on the next sitting day?

The fact that No. 10 is not being taken today is something we must look at. This was tabled by Senators Murphy and Ross and neither of them is here to move the motion. That is a disgrace to the House.

The Leader of the House to reply.

I have replied.

My question was if No. 10 would be taken on the next sitting day.

I am not in a position to say that at the moment.

Maybe I can help the House on this. The proposal, as I understood it——

Senator Ross, the debate on the Order of Business has concluded.

It is a pity that Senator Murphy who alleges that he holds this House in such high esteem is not present to move his motion.

Order of Business agreed to.
