Seanad Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 5 Jul 1983

Vol. 101 No. 5

Business of Seanad.

On the Order of Business of the House, we are not making as much progress as I would have hoped. I would like to point out to the Seanad that if this Bill is to be considered as planned in Dáil Éireann tomorrow it is necessary for it to pass tonight and appear on the Order Paper tomorrow in Dáil Éireann. Accordingly, it will be necessary to sit late to complete it and, if we go through without a suspension of sitting now, we will get to bed one hour earlier.

I do not think we can agree. We have been going strong here all day. Perhaps an hour is too long. What about three quarters of an hour? It might sharpen us up a bit.

Let us not get indigestion. We might become more disagreeable afterwards. If we are breaking, let us take the full hour. I would indicate to Senators that they will recall that I suggested, when we dealt with this last Wednesday, that we should start the debate on Thursday. I have no desire to curb the discussion now, but I do point out that it will be necessary to sit late and sit to completion.

I do not think anybody disagrees. This is a most important Bill. We are doing our best. We are not obstructive. It should get the airing it is getting. Facets are coming out which obviously have not been dealt with elsewhere. If we have to sit on for an hour or two so be it, we will sit on for an hour or two.

I did not intend any criticism of the quality of the debate.

Sitting suspended at 6.05 p.m. and resumed at 7p.m.
