Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 19 Oct 1983

Vol. 102 No. 2

Insurance Bill, 1983: Motion for Earlier Signature.

I move:

That, pursuant to subsection 2º of section 2 of Article 25 of the Constitution, Seanad Éireann concurs with the Government in a request to the President to sign the Insurance Bill, 1983, on a date which is earlier than the fifth day after the date on which the Bill shall have been presented to him.

I second the motion.

I concur with the Leader of the House. There have been so many changes made in company law here tonight that I would be very much afraid of what might happen in the future. We are being presented with a fait accompli and I sincerely hope that company law will be looked at very carefully. There are sections of the Bill which under normal circumstances we would reject out of hand, but we have been told there is a major problem in the insurance world and there are many people who may be affected by this problem. I am not satisfied that this is the right method to deal with ad hoc problems. We should have a look at company law and we should not be presented again with such a situation.

It is Labour Party policy to look at company law.

Question put and agreed to.
