Criminal Justice (Abolition of Death Penalty) Bill, 1984: First Stage.

I move:

That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to abolish the death penalty and substitute imprisonment for life, to provide that a minimum period of imprisonment shall be served by persons convicted of treason and certain murders and to provide for other connected matters.

The Bill is not being opposed at this stage.

Question put and agreed to.

When is it proposed to take Second Stage?

Next week.
