Vol. 104 No. 10

Irish Steel Limited (Amendment) Bill, 1984: Committee and Final Stages.

Section 1 agreed to.
SECTION 2.
Question proposed: "That section 2 stand part of the Bill."

Will we ever see a situation when shares will be sold to employees? If more money was needed could shares be sold to them? Could that ever become part of the structures?

The position is that from an early date there will be worker representation on the board of the company. It would be possible for the company to make proposals to allow what the Senator has in mind to be done. If the company made such proposals to me I would be very anxious to facilitate them. As the Senator may be aware, I have been promoting the idea of worker shareholding in industry. It is one way of getting rid of the ethos of there being two sides in industry. If people work longer hours or accept lower wages in order to make an enterprise succeed the benefits of that should not be enjoyed solely by the shareholders and employers. The employees should also enjoy the benefits.

Question put and agreed to.
