Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 31 Oct 1984

Vol. 105 No. 13

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 1 and 2 in accordance with what was announced yesterday. It is proposed to call the final speaker for the Government at 4.30 p.m. and that final speaker will be An Tánaíste, and then to take a decision and to vote, if necessary, on both No. 1 and No. 2 at 5.00 p.m. I think the House would probably agree that in order to enable as many Senators as possible to speak in the debate there should be no suspension of the sitting for lunch.

On the Adjournment four weeks ago I was given a commitment by a Minister of State that the report of the ad hoc committee on homelessness would be published within four weeks. That report has singularly failed to be published. I would like to inquire if I have any way of ensuring that a commitment which was made will in fact be met. It seems to me that there is something close to contempt of this House if a solemn commitment made to the House is apparently dismissed and ignored. Has this House any recourse when a specific commitment like that is not met?

I will communicate with the Senator later today.

Order of Business agreed to.
