Seanad Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 19 Feb 1985

Vol. 107 No. 4

Offences against the State (Amendment) Bill, 1985: Motion for earlier signature.

I move:

That, pursuant to subsection 2º of section 2 of Article 25 of the Constitution, Seanad Éireann concurs with the Government in a request to the President to sign the Offences against the State (Amendment) Bill, 1985, on a date which is earlier than the fifth day after the date on which the Bill shall have been presented to him."

The whole purpose of what the two Houses of the Oireachtas have been doing today would be negatived unless this House concurred with the Government in their request to the President that the Bill be signed tonight, thus enabling both Houses of the Oireachtas to play a part in remedying without delay the situation that has been met.

It does not ask the President to sign it tonight. It asks that it be signed on a date earlier than the fifth day. Could we confirm that it is the intention that the President will sign it tonight?

(Limerick East): Yes.

Question put and agreed.
The Seanad adjourned at 8.05 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 20 February 1985.
