Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 3 Jul 1985

Vol. 108 No. 13

Business of Seanad.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

Before we move to the matter on the Adjournment when is it proposed to sit again?

Normally we would propose to adjourn until 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, but a special consideration arises next week. There is the possibility that Dáil Éireann might rise for the summer recess at the end of next week and, even if that is not achieved, it will rise at the end of the following week. All Senators are conscious of the position with which this House is faced year after year whereby the Dáil in the closing week or weeks of its session passes important legislation and then adjourns leaving the Seanad in the relatively impotent position of having to discuss legislation and consider amendments, the passing of which would involve the recall of the Dáil. I had consultations this afternoon with the Chief Whip of the Opposition party and we feel that this House should sit three days next week so that we can deal with legislative business to as large an extent as possible before Dáil Éireann adjourns. I must apologise to Members of the House for the fact that they are getting much shorter notice than would normally be given in regard to the question of a Tuesday sitting but I think they would agree that it would be in the interests of the dignity of this House if we were able to carry out as much as possible of our legislative work, which has to be done before we adjourn, while the other House is still in session. For that reason I propose the adjournment until 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday next.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

Is that agreed?
