Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 1 Oct 1986

Vol. 114 No. 1

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Michael Lynch that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Finance to outline the progress to date in the renovation work to the Garda Barracks, Oldcastle, County Meath, since the matter was raised in the House on 20 November 1985.

I also received notice from Senator Rory Kiely of the following matter:

The extension of the disadvantaged areas scheme in west Limerick.

I also received notice from Senator Jack Daly of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to review the speed limits on roads.

I also received notice from Senator Mark Killilea of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to have investigated the withholding of the payment of a mortgage subsidy from a person (name supplied) in Galway and to arrange for the payment to be made as a matter of urgency.

I also received notice from Senator Donie Cassidy of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to sanction the building of a new vocational education school in Castlepollard.

I also received notice from Senator Jack Fitzsimons of the following matter:

The need for the Minister of State for the Arts to consider reversing the decision to introduce admission charges for the Treasury Gallery in the National Museum.

I also received notice from Senator Alexis FitzGerald of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to review the decision to close the Royal City of Dublin Hospital, Baggot Street; the Adelaide Hospital and the Meath Hospital.

I also received notice from Senator Brendan Ryan of the following matter:

The widescale practice of requiring members of the travelling community to sign on at labour exchanges for social assistance at a fixed time.

I also received notice of another matter from Senator Donie Cassidy:

The need for the Minister for Communications to ensure that RTE covers the 10th International Cavan Song Contest which is scheduled for Saturday, 7 February 1987, thereby ensuring that the province of Ulster gets at least one live TV light entertainment broadcast each year.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Lynch, Kiely, Daly, Killilea, FitzGerald, Fitzsimons, Brendan Ryan and Cassidy on the school in Castlepollard as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I regret I have to rule that the other matter raised by Senator Cassidy on the Cavan song contest is not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment on the ground of lack of Ministerial responsibility.

I have selected Senator Lynch's matter for today's Adjournment and it will be taken at 8 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. or earlier if the business ordered is concluded. Senators Kiely, Daly, Killilea, FitzGerald, Fitzsimons, Brendan Ryan and Cassidy may give notice for another day of the matters they wish to raise.
