Seanad Éireann debate -

Vol. 114 No. 16

Business of Seanad.

May I ask the Leader of the House if it is seriously intended to pursue this. There are 59 amendments and we are on amendment No. 13 now? The work the Seanad is doing on the Bill is important. I welcome the fact that the Minister has been open, both in the way he has tabled the amendments and in his receptiveness to the points being made by Senators and the amendments moved by them. It would be difficult to complete Committee Stage unless the House sits until after midnight. It does not seem to be of much value to continue with it later on rather than to adjourn it and resume it and dispose of it at another sitting.

The House agreed earlier to sit later than 8 p.m. to make progress on the Bill but it was never envisaged that we would complete Committee Stage tonight. We are making a lot of progress. It was suggested that we should sit for possibly an hour longer than the normal time. If it is agreeable to the House we will do that. The Minister is available. Senator Fallon and other Senators who have an interest agreed and the House agreed. There is no question of trying to complete it. We will try to make as much progress as possible in the amount of time available to us.

Sitting suspended at 5.30 p.m. and resumed at 6.30 p.m.
