Vol. 116 No. 20

Request Under Standing Order 29.

I have notice from Senator Brendan Ryan regarding a motion he wishes to move under Standing Order 29.

I wish to move a motion for the adjournment of the Seanad on a specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration. The matter is the serious threat to the welfare of many impoverished families resulting from the refusal of the executive of the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children to accept a Labour Court recommendation to resolve the industrial dispute in the society.

I have given careful consideration to the matter raised by Senator Brendan Ryan and I do not consider it to be a matter contemplated by Standing Order 29. I therefore regret that I have to rule it out of order.

I regret it also. Many families will suffer because of our inability to discuss this matter and the extraordinary obstinacy of that organisation's executive.
