Vol. 120 No. 5

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Brendan Ryan that, on the Motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The criteria used by the Department of Foreign Affairs to ensure that vessels carrying nuclear weapons do not enter Irish ports.

I also received notice from Senator Paschal Mooney of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Foreign Affairs to clarify whether the Government are continuing their efforts to secure the release of the Birmingham Six and the Guildford Four, a pardon for the Maguire family and if the Minister will seek an explanation from the British authorities about the inhuman treatment being meted out to Gerard Conlon of the Guildford Four who has been moved to a prison which will make it more difficult than ever for his family to visit him.

I also received notice from Senator John Connor of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to update our legislation on phone tapping to comply with rulings on this matter by the European Court.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Ryan and Mooney as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator Ryan's motion and it will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senator Mooney may give notice for another day of the matter he wishes to raise.

I regret I have to rule the matter raised by Senator John Connor is not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment on the ground that it would involve legislation.
