Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 22 Feb 1989

Vol. 122 No. 3

Request Under Standing Order 29.

Before I call the next Senator I have notice from Senator Ross regarding a motion which he wishes to move under Standing Order 29. I now call on Senator Ross to give notice of the motion before I give my ruling.

I wish to move a motion for the Adjournment of the Seanad on a specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, the matter being the need for the Irish Government to break off diplomatic relations with Iran.

I have given careful consideration to the matter raised by Senator Ross and I do not consider it to be a matter contemplated by Standing Order 29. I, therefore, regret that I have to rule it out of order.

On a point of order, I do not challenge the Cathaoirleach's ruling for one moment and may have misinterpreted this. Also I do not want to interrupt this debate, it is unfortunate this has arisen at this time. Perhaps the Cathaoirleach could give me guidance on an issue like this because it is very difficult to raise in the Seanad as a matter of public interest——

I will see the Senator any time in my office. We cannot debate this matter now. I have given my ruling. I will be in my office until 11 o'clock tonight and I will give the Senator any guidance he wants.

On a point of order, would it be in order for me to raise the question of the Government playing footsie with a murdering regime in Iran?

The Senator knows well that is not a point of order.

It is a point of order because the Cathaoirleach says it is not a matter of——

The Senator is now disorderly. He may not continue to carry on in this way.

Would it be in order for me to raise on the Adjournment the issue of Iran issuing death threats overseas?

The Senator is now disorderly and he knows it.

Would it be in order to raise it on the Adjournment?

The Senator is out of order. Will he please resume his seat.
