Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 10 May 1989

Vol. 122 No. 15

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Tony Bromell that, on the Motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The widespread concern about the recent alleged involvement of the South African Government with the importation of arms by a Loyalist organisation.

I also received notice from Senator Philip Hogan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Industry and Commerce to provide extra staffing in the Patents Office.

I also received notice from Senator David Norris of the following matter:

The need to set up a working group under the auspices of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Attorney General to establish the correct procedures under which honorary citizenship of Ireland can be conferred on Raoul Wallenberg in recognition of his outstanding services to humanity and as a means of expediting his release from captivity.

I also received notice from Senator Paul Bradford of the following matter:

In view of the recent High Court judgment on Mallow Hospital the need for the Minister for Health to state clearly his support for the continuance of full general hospital services at Mallow.

I also received notice from Senator Katharine Bulbulia of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Finance to clarify the position of Waterford in the Government decentralisation programme by identifying the State agency or agencies to be located there and by giving a firm projection of the stage processing of the relocation.

I also received notice from Senator Nuala Fennell of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to explain why some disabled young people attending sheltered workshops do not qualify for any payment or allowance other than £3.50 per week.

I also received notice from Senator John Murphy of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to ensure effective arrangements in assessing the large numbers of pupils to be examined under the new junior certificate curriculum in respect of aural testing and oral competence in the Irish language.

I also received notice from Senator Joe O'Toole of the following matter:

The replacement of classroom assistants at primary level in schools serving disadvantaged and socio-economically deprived pupils.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Bromell, Hogan, Norris, Bradford, Bulbulia, Fennell, Murphy and O'Toole as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator Bromell's matter and it will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Hogan, Norris, Bradford, Bulbulia, Fennell, Murphy and O'Toole may give notice for another day of the matters they wish to raise.
