Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 10 May 1989

Vol. 122 No. 15

Requests under Standing Order 29.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

Before I call on Senator Tom Fitzgerald as the next speaker I have received notice from Senator Michael Ferris and Senator Katherine Bulbulia regarding motions on the same subject which each wishes to move under Standing Order 29. I will call Senator Ferris first and then Senator Bulbulia to give notice of their motions before I give my ruling.

I wish to move a motion under this Standing Order for the Adjournment of the Seanad on a specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent attention. The matter is:

That Seanad Éireann expresses its grave concern at the implications of the Supreme Court judgement of yesterday in the Hyland case and calls on the Government as a matter of urgency to outline the steps they propose to take to resolve the anomalies now arising and with full retrospective effect.

I wish to move a motion for the adjournment of the Seanad on a specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, the matter being:

To ask the Minister for Social Welfare to respond to yesterday's Supreme Court decision which affects so many social welfare recipients and which, of course, has implications for the Exchequer.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

I have given careful consideration to the matters raised by both Senators and I do not consider them to be matters contemplated by Standing Order 29. I regret, therefore, that I have to rule both of them out of order.
