Vol. 122 No. 21

Request Under Standing Order 29.

I have had notice from Senator David Norris regarding a motion which he wishes to move under Standing Order 29. I now call on Senator David Norris.

By way of introduction may I say that it may appear a little odd since I had put this down as a motion on the Adjournment, and it may appear that I did not see this as a matter of urgency, but I would point out that this matter has drawn a leading article in The Irish Times this morning and comment from the leading minority Churches.

May I advise the Senator that all he has to do is to state the motion and I will deal with it.

Thank you, Cathaoirleach, I am happy to do so. I wish to move a motion for the adjournment of the Seanad on a specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration:

The need for the Minister for Health to give a categorical assurance that in the reorganisation of the Dublin hospital situation and the eventual absorption of the Adelaide Hospital into the new hospital at Tallaght, the different ethical approach embodied in that hospital's tradition will not be overwhemled by the dominant ethos of Catholic ethical committees.

I have given careful consideration to the matter raised by Senator Norris and I do not consider it to be a matter contemplated by Standing Order 29. I therefore regret that I have to rule it out of order.
